I had learned about the enormous toll that tobacco takes while working with the National Cancer Institute in my Porter Novelli days. I also learned what a huge payout in lives and cost savings can be gained by reducing tobacco use among youths as well as adults.

But I see that as a positive development, not a negative one, with boomers leading the way to a brighter future for all of us. At every step of their remarkable journey, they have transformed American life and culture. The transformation began with the first wave of babies just after World War II. As hospital nurseries started filling up, schools were built, pediatricians were trained, and consumers bought the products and services they needed to cope with the deluge. In short, Americans rolled up their sleeves and did what they had to do.
