I never knew my mother's parents until I turned 17. I remember asking about them throughout my childhood, and eventually, when i was older and able to understand, my dad told me that they got into a fight and don't talk. He didn't make any assumptions that they don't care about me.
I'm happy to have them in my life right now. I kind of wish that i had grown up with them around, but in the end, the past doesn't matter.
Children pick up on your anger. Try to keep the door open with your father. One day he'll realize what he's missing out on.

P.S. It's nice to see you smile for once. =]

The best way to be a good father is always tell your children the truth. No matter how painful it may be for them.
