the last straw

Like any good rock band, Dark Disco Club has had plenty of internal struggles. As far as I can remember, the one issue that’s never gotten to us is that of money. God knows I’m not in it for the money, and I can’t imagine anyone else is either. Anyway, let me show you the actual string of emails that led to me firing my entire band.

Yo, if possible bring the $266 from TnJ’s to practice tonight. I’m about to order DVD’s and shit.

Yoyo… not sure if you just forgot or what, but can I get that $266 ASAP please. I bought DVD’s and cases, and have to do some printing soon. I keep it all in my normal bank account and it’s dwindling pretty low, so I don’t wanna fuck with that too much. Let me know.

sooo, in all seriousness, can I grab that DDC cash soon?

This is the last time I’m gonna mention it, but can you please get me that $266 soon? I’m not sure what the deal is, but you’ve intentionally ignored the emails about it.

I’ve always kept all the DDC money, and I’ve always made sure that DDC shit got paid for, including all the money I’ve paid out of my own pocket for various things. If there is some issue about the money, you can tell me that. But as far as I can tell you have the $266 and are simply planning to ignore the issue until its forgotten about.

I’m honestly not trying to keep the $$$. I make my own, its not the issue. In my mind I just don’t understand why I can’t hold onto it until it needs to be used. I know that there should be close to $150-200 already, and last time I checked blank DVD’s/cases don’t cost $400 unless there is a huge demand for theses DVD’s that I don’t know about. Please correct me if I’m wrong on any of this.

You’re not “wrong” on anything aside from a random spontaneous decision made on behalf of the band, that out of nowhere the money would be held or handled in a different way than it has been since day 1. Like I said, anything DDC has ever needed has come directly out of band money first, if not my own personal money. If I collected money back from the band fund to reimburse myself for what I’ve spent out of pocket, there wouldn’t be any band money left. Hell, I paid $650 for a laptop that I bought specifically for DDC, and I use for NOTHING at all aside from our live shows. At the moment, I am extremely low on cash, and having the extra $266 in there will help me out. But at the same time, I keep tabs on what gets spent on DDC-related things and I don’t mix my own personal costs into that.

(lol) Im really trying not to make create a rift here. You spent $650 on a laptop, in my eyes thats like me buying a guitar, or a drummer buying a cymbal. It’s a instrument needed to play live. I would never expect a band to re-imburse me for something I bought on my own accord. With that aside how much money is needed to purchase DVD shits?

The dvd shit is already purchased and at my house. I don’t need the money for the dvd’s. I “need” the money because that’s the way it’s done in DDC, and that’s always been the way. One day you just silently decided on your own to change all that, and I haven’t heard an explanation as to why that is, or why anyone would think that is ok. I also explained that I need it because I’m way low on cash, and I’d rather my bank account not hit drastic levels.

I’ve never taken a salary for doing all the shit that I do for DDC. Booking agents get paid, managers get paid, graphic artists get paid, studio engineers get paid… yet I have never taken money from the band for all of this stuff. You guys can sit back and say how silly that sounds, yet no one has ever stepped up to do what I do. It takes time and effort, and my time is valuable to me.

Meanwhile, all of this is irrelevant. All the questions you can ask me, and all the answers I can give have nothing to do with the simple fact that I handle the DDC money, and all other aspects off DDC-related business or DDC-related anything for that matter.

In all the years DDC has existed, this is the first time I can remember there ever being a money “issue” of any kind, and its one of only 2 shows ever that someone other than me took the money from the venue. That means 50% of the times someone other than me handled it, there was a money issue. Not a good success rate.

What is this Origivation? I can you tell that your highly aggrivated with me and I apologize for that. Listen I’m not gonna sit here and argue cause that is just pointless. All I can say is we’re not seeing eye to eye on this issue. I have absolutely no intention on keeping this money for myself, none what so ever. The money is safe and sound, and when we reconvene DDC actvities we know we’ll have it. If you wanna discuss further, please give me a buzz of my phone cause this isn’t gonna get any less uglier through email.

I am not playing the show on October 27.
Everyone else is free to show up and play that gig, but do me the favor of not calling it “dark disco club”.

This latest issue of the DDC money being held is simply the last in a long line of retarded issues we’ve had, and it simply isn’t necessary. This is the one show I didn’t book, so I won’t be canceling it. I feel like I was just strong-armed out of a role that I have always played (successfully) in DDC, and it’s just not cool by me.

Here’s the way I see this money situation, based solely on facts and no bullshit:
– I have always handled and held all DDC money
– all members of DDC have been satisfied with me handling it (as far as i know)
– AO, you decided on your own (not with the group) that you are now in charge of holding the DDC money, even after I explained that it would help me greatly in the short term.

Basically, I have never shortchanged DDC as far as our band money goes. In fact the opposite is true. I have paid out of pocket for countless expenses like printing, supplies, and god knows what else. This is an insult, and the issue ends here. AO is $266 richer.

I can finally say, with all joking aside, and without any anger…
Everyone is fired.
– Joseph

That was that. A moment later I sent an email to Tom, letting him know that he was not fired. The guy is out of his mind, but hell, that’s his charm. And after all that, the only one who hasn’t contacted me in some way is Anthony. He has his $266, and apparently that’s all he cared about. He’ll get in another band at some point I’m sure, and it won’t be half as cool as DDC.

But the good news… I SAW MASSIVE ATTACK! Good ol’ Tom called me up on Saturday afternoon and offered me a ticket to the show. To be honest, I was on the verge of suicide over not being able to see this show. Massive Attack has been a huge musical inspiration to me since I first heard them so many years ago, and it just sucked that I was going to miss the only chance I’d probably ever have to see them live. But Tom saved the day, and I am ever so grateful for that. The show was friggin’ amazing! It might be the coolest non-Pearl Jam concert that I’ve ever been to. The stage, the lights, and the amazing musicians and singers combined for a perfect execution of these songs.
